BC NDP candidate and incumbent John Horgan took the island district of Juan de Fuca in 2009 with 57 per cent of the vote, a strong showing. Horgan's been an MLA since 2005, and is currently the Opposition house leader. Horgan ran for the provincial NDP leadership in early 2011, but lost in a middle round of voting.

Horgan will run again this May. The BC Liberal candidate for the district is Kerrie Reay, a Sooke councillor and project manager at BC Corrections headquarters in Victoria.

The BC Green candidate is Carlos Serra, who runs a "green" English as a Second Language school in Victoria.

This district was created in 2008 as part of the provincial boundary redistribution and draws from two older districts: 59 per cent Malahat-Juan de Fuca and 21 per cent Esquimalt-Metchosin.
