At a glance

BC Liberal John Les won the Chilliwack seat in 2009 with almost 45 per cent of the vote. Second place BC NDP candidate Mason Goulden earned 32 per cent.

This election, the BC Liberals selected former BC Conservative John Martin to defend the riding. Martin is a criminologist and faculty member in the School of Criminology at the University of the Fraser Valley.

Challengers include BC NDP candidate Patti MacAhonic, who is executive director of the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce. The BC Conservative candidate is Chad Eros, a business consultant and management accountant.

Photographer Kim Reimer is the BC Green candidate. Reimer helped organize an anti-chlorination campaign that opposes a Fraser Health Authority order for Chilliwack to chlorinate its water.

Michael Halliday is running as a candidate for the Excalibur Party, a new party which aims to expound Arthurian values.

The Tyee has identified Chilliwack as one to watch this May. As reporter Doug Ward describes: "The New Democrats won the adjacent riding of Chilliwack-Hope for the first time ever last year thanks to vote-splitting on the right. The NDP hopes to do it again in this Bible belt riding, which they have also never held. The BC Liberal candidate, John Martin, had nothing good to say about his party last year, when he was the Conservative candidate in Chilliwack-Hope. 'The BC Liberals are in free fall,' he declared last spring. But Martin has changed his tune in this contest, which pits the college criminologist against NDP candidate Patti MacAhonic, former executive-director of the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce, and Conservative Chad Eros. Again, the NDP will need a strong Conservative showing for MacAhonic to come up the middle."

The district was created in the 2008 boundary redistribution from Chilliwack-Sumas and Chilliwack-Kent.
